TriMet’s farecard is called Hop Fastpass® (or Hop for short). To pay, just tap the green Hop reader when you board. You can tap with your phone or contactless credit card to pay the $2.80 Adult fare. Or, if you qualify for reduced fare, get a Hop card.

The fare is the same for TriMet buses, MAX Light Rail and WES Commuter Rail. We offer reduced fares for seniors, youth, people with disabilities, people who qualify based on income, veterans and active-duty military.

With your TriMet fare, you can also ride Portland Streetcar and C-TRAN Local/Regional buses at no additional charge. Transferring to certain premium services such as C-TRAN Express/C-VAN or TriMet LIFT may require an upgrade charge.
Ways to pay
To pay, tap the green Hop reader at the MAX/WES station or inside the bus every time you board. You can tap with your phone or contactless credit card to pay the $2.80 Adult fare. Or, tap with a Hop card, virtual Hop card or Hop ticket.

Want your Hop card on your phone? This is the best option if you qualify for reduced fare and want to pay with your phone. Download the Hop app to add a virtual Hop card to your mobile wallet.
Note: Photo ID Hop cards for people who qualify based on income, disability or military status, LIFT cards, 1-Year passes and employer-issued Hop cards cannot be converted into virtual cards yet, but we’re looking into adding these in the future.

On the bus, tell the operator whether you want a 2½-Hour or 1-Day ticket, then insert coins and bills into the farebox and grab your ticket from the printer on your right. On MAX, buy and load a Hop card from the vending machine at the station before boarding.
Tip: Unlike buses, there are no Hop readers on board MAX or WES. Tap the Hop reader at the station before boarding the train.
Hop card machines at MAX and WES stations
You can buy and reload plastic Hop cards for Adult, Honored Citizen and Youth riders from the vending machines at MAX and WES stations.
- Tap the touchscreen to start.
- Choose your language: English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian or Simplified Chinese. Machines also have audio instructions, Braille and raised-letter features for riders with vision impairments.
- Choose to buy a new card or reload an existing one. A new Hop card costs $3, and the minimum load amount is $1.40.
- For reloading, tap your Hop card on the reader below the screen.
- Select your desired load amount, then pay. MAX card machines accept cash, credit/debit cards and Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. WES machines accept cards only.
- Collect your card and receipt if wanted — you’re ready to ride!
- Remember to tap your Hop card on the green Hop reader at the station before boarding MAX or WES.
How Hop works
Tap to board
When you first tap a Hop reader, the 2½-Hour fare is deducted from your account.
Good for 2½ hours
After you tap, you can board any combination of buses, trains or streetcars to complete your trip within 2½ hours. Remember to tap every time you board — your tap is your proof of payment. (You won’t be charged unless you tap again after 2½ hours, but you still need to tap to validate your fare.)
Day Passes
With Hop, instead of buying passes in advance, you earn them as you go. If you tap again after 2½ hours, you’ll be charged for a second fare. You’ll also automatically earn a Day Pass — which means you can ride as much as you want for the rest of the day until 3 a.m.
Month Passes
After paying for $100 worth of rides in a calendar month ($28 for Honored Citizen and Youth), you automatically earn a Month Pass — which means you can ride for free for the rest of the month. No matter how much you ride, you’ll never pay more than a Month Pass in a month.
Checking fares
TriMet personnel randomly check for valid fare, so be ready to show your phone, credit card, Hop card or ticket if asked. They may ask to see ID for proof of eligibility if you’re using an Honored Citizen or Youth fare.
Do I need a Hop card?
You can instantly pay the Adult fare ($2.80) by tapping your phone or contactless credit/debit card on the Hop reader — no Hop card needed. A Hop card is only required if you want to use our reduced fare.
Unlock reduced fare
You’ll need a Hop card in order to use our reduced fare (up to 72% off). For seniors 65+, people on Medicare and youth 7-17, pick up a Hop card at the grocery store or add a virtual Hop card on your phone for $3. You’ll need to apply for a Photo ID Hop card if you qualify based on disability, income or military/veteran status.
Register for extra features
When you register your Hop card at myhopcard.com, your account balance is protected if you lose your card, and you can set up Auto-Load so you’re never stuck without fare.
Put it on your phone
Prefer to pay with your phone? Download the Hop app to add a virtual Hop card to your phone’s mobile wallet ($3) instead of using a plastic card.
