TriMet Follows State Laws Including State Sanctuary Laws
TriMet follows state laws, including state sanctuary laws. As a sanctuary state, it is against Oregon law for state and local law enforcement or public agencies (state and local government offices) in the state of Oregon to participate directly or indirectly in immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant.
Per Oregon sanctuary laws, Oregon public bodies and law enforcement agencies can generally not inquire about immigration status or be involved in federal immigration enforcement efforts. Learn more on the Oregon Department of Justice website.
Occasionally, Transit Police officers may ask riders for a valid form of identification. For example, if a citation needs to be issued or a report filed. If a rider doesn't have a driver's license or other standard ID, officers might ask if the person has a passport. This is simply to confirm the person's legal name, not to check immigration status.
Per our Privacy Policy, TriMet does not share personal information with others, with the limited exceptions of service providers, our transit partners C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar, and recipients who are entitled to the information for legal or safety reasons.
TriMet will not provide personal information to ICE or any similar agency for immigration enforcement purposes unless compelled by law.
When people apply for our Honored Citizen reduced fare, a government-issued photo ID is required, but it doesn’t need to be a passport, nor specify immigration status.
When conducting surveys, TriMet shreds any paper records and removes any personally identifiable information, ensuring that only aggregated data is used. TriMet may collect demographic data but does not inquire about individuals' immigration status.
As a sanctuary state, Oregon has policies in place that limit cooperation or involvement with federal immigration enforcement activities.
